Osflo High K Maize is the blend for paddocks where potassium is what’s holding the crop back. Same composted poultry litter base, same organic matter, with the potassium lifted to meet what a heavy silage crop pulls out.

Not sure whether potassium is your limiting nutrient? That is what the soil test is for, and it is the fastest conversation to have before the ground gets worked.

When High K is the right call

A maize silage crop yielding 20 tonnes of dry matter per hectare takes up around 256 kg of nitrogen, 40 kg of phosphorus and 240 kg of potassium. Potassium is the biggest single draw, and on paddocks that have been in maize for a few seasons it is usually the first thing to run short.

That is the job High K does. Where your soil potassium is sitting low, the high-K mix goes on at a full rate. Where it is holding up, we pull the rate back and still meet the crop. On a runoff block where you are also putting conventional fertiliser on, it comes back further again. The typical rate bands are set out on the Osflo Maize Mix page, and your soil test decides which line you are on.

Before planting, make sure you have a recent soil test, collected from 150 mm deep on the paddock you intend to plant.

Maize also earns its place as a break crop in a pasture renewal programme. It roots down to around 1.8 m, so it picks up nutrient that has dropped below the reach of shallow-rooted pasture species, and on a dairy platform it turns high-fertility effluent paddocks into feed.

Every Osflo blend puts nutrient and organic matter on in the same pass. The organic matter is what rebuilds structure, drainage and moisture-holding on ground that gets worked hardest, and that is the part a straight synthetic blend cannot do. Where the soil test shows gaps beyond potassium, we blend the phosphate, sulphur or magnesium in on top.
